Frequently Asked Questions

 >>  What is the North Carolina Community Foundation?
The North Carolina Community Foundation is a statewide community foundation; we seek gifts from individuals, corporations and other foundations to build endowments and ensure financial security for non-profit organizations and institutions throughout the state.

 >>  Does the North Carolina Community Foundation make grants?
Grants are made from designated, donor advised and scholarship funds. The Foundation's community affiliates make grants from unrestricted endowments to support a broad range of charitable purposes in their communities including human services, education, health, arts, religion, civic affairs, and the conservation and preservation of historical, cultural and environmental resources.

 >>  What is a community foundation?
A community foundation, unlike a private foundation or a corporate foundation, provides donors of diverse financial capabilities and interests with a vehicle for pooling their resources to accomplish charitable goals they as individuals would not be able to achieve.

 >>  Do you compete with other community foundations?
Since we are a statewide foundation, we are committed to focusing our efforts in communities and counties who can benefit most from our affiliate programs – those not currently being served by a community foundation.

 >>  What benefits and services do I receive as a donor?
The Foundation enables individual donors of all means to establish endowments without the burden of complicated investment management and administrative fees. We make gift giving easy for donors by providing research on charitable needs, a wide range of options for establishing funds, high quality investment management, professional advice on giving options and their tax consequences, regular audit and reporting mechanisms, involvement in grant distribution and donor recognition.

 >>  What benefits do we receive as an organization? Why should I entrust our organization's endowment to NCCF?
The Foundation manages endowment funds so that the organization can do what it does best - deliver services. We relieve your organization of the expenses of many administrative tasks such as bookkeeping, income tax accounting, legal counsel and investment management. We also act as a catalyst to find donors for your organization. Ultimately, the Foundation helps your organization prepare for a sound financial future by providing an endowment vehicle that will ensure continued financial growth and stability.

 >>  Why donate through the North Carolina Community Foundation, why not donate directly to the organization?
Donors contributing directly to an organization may not always know how the money was used by the organization or whether it was invested appropriately in order to reach its full potential. The Foundation's professional staff and experienced board will ensure that your contribution is directed to the designated cause or organization, that the fund is used appropriately and that the investment arrangement maximizes your donation's financial potential.

 >>  How do I establish my own fund? How much money does it take?
The procedure for establishing a fund with the North Carolina Community Foundation is simple. Our professional staff is available to work with you and your advisors to determine which fund type is most appropriate to help you achieve your charitable objectives. Members of our staff will work with you to draft a legal agreement outlining the charitable purpose and structure of the fund. A gift of $10,000 is required to start most types of funds, and a gift of $25,000 is required to start a scholarship fund. Remember that these gifts may come from one donor or many sources. Our professional staff is available to work with you and your advisors to determine which fund type is most appropriate to help you achieve your charitable objectives. The legal documents are then drafted for your signature.

 >>  Why should I contribute to the North Carolina Community Foundation Endowment Fund?
One of the strengths of the Foundation is that it is independently endowed and, like the organizations it works with, will continue in perpetuity without fear of future financial security. The mission of the Foundation is to promote the establishment and growth of endowment funds - the best way to do this is for the Foundation itself to be securely and soundly endowed.
