Elizabeth City Jaycees establish two new Endowed Funds
The Elizabeth City Jaycees established two different types of endowed funds with the Northern Albemarle Community Foundation, an affiliate of the North Carolina Community Foundation. “Taking this step is a culmination of a long research and review process,” said Russ Haddad, Jaycee President. “We wanted to find a permanent way to continue to support the communities we serve and working with the North Carolina Community Foundation and its Northern Albemarle Affiliate gives us the opportunity to set up a well governed scholarship program and a community grant process for years to come.”
Elizabeth City Jaycee members: Larry Glasscock, President, Russ Haddad and Sarah Weeks meet with Winnie Wood, President of the Northern Albemarle Community Foundation to establish two new endowed funds.
The Elizabeth City Jaycees Scholarship Endowment will be awarded annually to one or more graduating seniors from any of the five counties served by the Jaycees: Pasquotank, Camden, Perquimans, Gates and Chowan. The initial award will be a $1,000 scholarship and will be awarded to students who have good academic records, have financial need and who have given service to their schools and communities. Scholarship criteria and applications have been sent to area High School Guidance offices. The application deadline is April 20.
The second fund established is the Judge Thomas Watts Memorial Fund. In the years to come, this fund will award grants to community organizations through an annual grant process conducted by the Jaycees and the Northern Albemarle Community Foundation. The first grants will be awarded in the spring of 2006. Judge Watts donated a parcel of land to the Jaycees many years ago and the sale of that property has enabled the club to establish these two significant resources to benefit these counties, for years and years to come.
“We are delighted to welcome these new funds into our growing family of funds that benefit our counties,” commented Winnie Wood, President of the Northern Albemarle Community Foundation. “We feel very fortunate to have the services from the North Carolina Community Foundation to support us and to help us address our community needs. We now have scholarship funds, agency funds, community funds, and advised funds. Each of these funds helps our community and provides a tax benefit to the donors. We have so much more that can be done, but this is an exciting opportunity for our region.” The Northern Albemarle Community Foundation Affiliate serves Camden, Gates, Pasquotank and Perquimans counties. A new affiliate is being organized to serve Chowan County.
The North Carolina Community Foundation was established as the state’s only statewide community foundation in 1988, with gifts from all the major banks serving the state and with gifts from leading philanthropists. The Affiliate partnerships that have been formed with community leaders are the cornerstone to its growth and success. Each Affiliate has its own By-laws and Board of Directors to guide its activities and growth. Each Affiliate has staff support both in the field and administratively through financial and legal services from the central office located in Raleigh.
