Abigail Disney Keynotes NC Community Foundation Event To Launch New Women's Fund In Wake County
Abigail Disney spoke about the role of philanthropy in effecting social change at the May 10 launch event of The Women’s Network – “Connecting for Change,” a new program of the North Carolina Community Foundation (NCCF). More than a hundred female business, education and community leaders from throughout Wake County attended the luncheon at North Ridge Country Club.
Disney, Roy’s grand-daughter and Walt’s grand-niece, is the founder and president of the Daphne Foundation, which makes grants to community-based organizations working with low-income communities in New York City, where she lives. She spoke about growing up with the Disney legacy and how philanthropy has shaped her life. “Privilege without a conscience is a kind of prison, and philanthropy is the cure,” she said.
The Women’s Network is a new NCCF program designed to maximize women’s leadership in philanthropy by engaging and educating its membership, increasing charitable contributions and strengthening the Wake County community through the impact of collective giving. Members of The Women’s Network agree to contribute $1,200 annually for five years to fund an endowment to support Wake County needs. Currently about 50 Wake County women have joined the group. For information about joining or applying for a grant, contact Carrie Gray, NCCF regional associate, at cgray@nccommunityfoundation.org.
