The Avery Community Foundation was established to serve the needs of local
nonprofit organizations, donors and charitable causes. The Avery Community
Foundation is an affiliate of the North Carolina Community Foundation.

Endowment funds:
Beech Mountain Emergency Services Fund
This fund supports the emergency services for the community of Beech Mountain as provided by the
Beech Mountain Volunteer Fire Department. Gary "GJ" Johnston Leadership Scholarship
This fund provides scholarships to employees of Linville Ridge in Linville, NC.
Neighbors Helping Neighbors
Neighbors Helping Neighbors is a fund that makes grants from its endowment for charitable,
benevolent, cultural, religious, civic, health, scientific and educational purposes within Avery County.
Chris Juliano Memorial Fund
Named for a valued member of the Avery County Rescue Squad and the Beech Mountain Fire and
Rescue Department, the Chris Juliano Memorial Fund supports the Mountain Ambulance and Health
Care Foundation and its programs.
Sam & Sibyl Thompson Endowment
The Sam & Sibyl Thompson Endowment Fund supports charitable, educational, religious and scientific
purposes in Avery County.
Danny Owens Memorial Fund
The Danny Owens Memorial Fund was established by the Newland Fire Department to provide
scholarships to residents of Avery County who are either a firefighter or a family member of a local
firefighter.
F. H. "Sammy" Ross, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
The F.H. "Sammy" Ross, Jr. Memorial Scholarship is awarded to eligible Linville Ridge employees,
children whose parents or guardians are employees of Linville Ridge, and children and grandchildren of
retired employees if they worked more than three years at Linville Ridge.
Avery Expo/Fair and Activities Fund
The Avery Expo/Fair and Activities Fund supports the agricultural and horticultural programs of the
Avery County Expo Center and Fairgrounds, which serves as a catalyst for community development
and civic affairs benefiting Avery County residents and visitors by the sharing of space, expertise and
vision.
Avery Legacy Fund
The Avery Legacy Fund enables the Avery Community Foundation to respond to changing community
needs and to enhance the quality of community life within the county. Donors allow flexibility in how
these funds are to be used, leaving the Avery Board of Directors to award grants each year to local
nonprofit organizations.
Penland School of Crafts Fund
This fund provides ongoing support for the Penland School of Crafts.
