{"title":"Ashe County Community Foundation awards local grants","content":"<p><img style=\"vertical-align: middle; margin: 5px auto; display: block;\" title=\"Ashe County Community Foundation Grants Chair Karen Powell presents a grant award to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwestern North Carolina staff.\" src=\"https:\/\/nmcdn.io\/e186d21f8c7946a19faed23c3da2f0da\/295b4aa3caf147538b0a606012c2aae2\/files\/ashe\/DSC_1802-process-s450x300.JPG\" alt=\"Ashe County Community Foundation Grants Chair Karen Powell presents a grant award to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwestern North Carolina staff.\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>The board of advisors of the Ashe County Community Foundation announced grant awards from its community grantmaking fund at a reception on June 2 at the Ashe Public Library, according to Linda Slade, board president.<\/p>\r\n<p>Karen Powell, grants chair, recognized this year&#8217;s nonprofit recipients:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Appalachian State University to serve special needs elderly and children who require one-on-one assistance.<\/li>\r\n<li>Ashe Arts Council to address bullying issues through seven performances of the Pirate of Bully Bay and Maximus Mars by Bright Star Children's Theatre.<\/li>\r\n<li>Ashe Services to purchase a quad stroller that allows infants to more easily access facilities and the outdoor learning environment.<\/li>\r\n<li>Hospitality House to help meet the transportation cost for homeless individuals and families traveling between Ashe County and Boone.<\/li>\r\n<li>Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwestern North Carolina to purchase healthy meal boxes for food insecure patients discharged from Ashe Memorial Hospital.<\/li>\r\n<li>Riverview Community Center for roof repairs for the building served by Ashe Outreach.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Slade thanked the community for its support of the Ashe County Community Foundation. &#8220;These grants are important to our community and our quality of life,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Critical programs would not be possible without the generosity of many individuals and organizations that have supported Ashe County&#8217;s community fund and endowed funds to support our community.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<p>Special thanks was given Mannon Eldreth, who helped established the Daniel Lee \"Dan\" Eldreth Memorial Endowment, through which the majority of the grants were awarded.<\/p>\r\n<p>John Duvall, representing the Beaver Creek High School Memorial Scholarship Fund, spoke about the establishment of the scholarship and recognized a recent recipient, Alex Kissinger.<\/p>","excerpt":"<p>The board of advisors of the Ashe County Community Foundation announces grant awards from its community grantmaking fund.<\/p>","url":"\/news\/ashe-county-community-foundation-awards-local-grants-ashe-county-community-foundation-2016-06-20","publishedAt":1466455881,"media":[{"type":"image","url":"https:\/\/nmcdn.io\/e186d21f8c7946a19faed23c3da2f0da\/295b4aa3caf147538b0a606012c2aae2\/files\/ashe\/DSC_1802.JPG","title":"DSC 1802","caption":"","size":"5134313"}],"enableComments":false,"inMenu":false,"meta":null,"ordinal":0,"orderChildrenBy":"","id":"920459f890534ed6ae561d5250741b73","parent":"31bc018cb0694068b20999237c54f462","node":48074,"created":1466455881,"modified":1528717387,"fresh":1,"type":"post","children":{},"relations":{"category":[{"title":"Ashe County Community Foundation","source":null,"url":"\/categories\/communities\/northwestern\/ashe-county-community-foundation","content":"","inMenu":false,"publishedAt":1536247847,"meta":{"title":"","description":"","excludeFromSitemap":"No"},"ordinal":0,"orderChildrenBy":"","permission":"write","tinyMCE_dummy":"","excerpt":"","media":"0","visibleTo":"Everyone","id":"c18c315e7bc64d1ba112744c73f7dba5","parent":"91ed602f33d34403bcb61439858c5ea1","node":20869,"created":1533158609,"modified":1536247847,"fresh":1,"type":"f9a6b2b005cb46ed8778f11c37e4d3a5","children":{}}]},"permission":"read"}
