The board of directors of the Bertie-Hertford Community Foundation and members of the Bertie-Hertford Women’s Fund, a program of the BHCF, announce $10,300 in grants for 2014, according to Laura Beasley, board president and a member of the women’s giving group.

Awards were made to area nonprofits during its recent grants and scholarship reception held at the new Bertie County High School. This year’s nonprofit recipients include:

  • $500 to Roanoke Chowan Humane Society to provide animal protection and welfare
  • $500 to Union Rural Fire Department for engine batteries and chargers on its fire trucks  
  • $400 to Food Bank of the Albemarle for food sourcing
  • $1,000 to Good Shepherd Food Pantry to sponsor their annual food drive, Spooktacular
  • $3,000 to Roanoke Chowan Women’s Job Corps program
  • $4,900 to Ahoskie Food Pantry for their children’s power back pack food program

Beasley thanked the community for support of the BHCF. “These grants are important to our community and our quality of life,” she said. “These six agencies are providing important programs, and we are proud to be able to support them through contributions from the community.”

Austine Evans, scholarship and grants chair, announced the winners of two scholarships held with the BHCF: the Earl U. Capps Scholarship benefits a Ridgecroft senior, and Joseph Landon Larabee is the recipient. The M.C. Ashe Family Scholarship benefits seniors in North Hampton County:  Austin Watkins, Jaron Odom, Shakerra Taylor and Erik Williams are the recipients.

The BHCF is an affiliate of the North Carolina Community Foundation. The community fund was established to help support local charitable needs through annual grants. In addition to Beasley and Evans, board members are: John Tayloe, vice president, Marti Tyler, treasurer and secretary, Ron Wesson, Lindsay Vaughan, Karen Ray, Beverly Edwards, John Davis, Penny Rose and Carol Everett.
