Board members visited several grantees and learned more about their missions and their impact on Johnston County.

  • We started off by visiting Community and Senior Services and Executive Director Neal Davis. He showed us pictures of the portable wheelchair ramps we had funded last year, plus he gave us a tour of the offices and introduced us to the staff. We also got to see the exercise equipment for seniors that we funded this year. It was an informative visit and certainly time well spent with this busy non-profit.
  • We next met in Princeton at the Me Fine Foundation, which also runs a thrift store, located on Highway 70. The thrift store was packed with donations, and the staff was very welcoming. We toured the building and the administrative offices, and heard from staffers Lori Lee and Elizabeth Diaz about how quickly Me Fine has grown. They do wonderful work for the families of children in the cancer wings at Duke and UNC Hospitals. Check out their thrift store when you’re out that way – you’ll love the many pictures of the children lining the walls!
  • On the next afternoon, we went over to Benson to see the Partnership for Children’s Early Learning Resource Center. We were treated to a tour of the building and learned how families can check out learning materials for their children to play with on a three-week basis. While we were there, families came in to return checked-out items and get new ones. The children were adorable and the parents so gracious and appreciative.
  • That evening, we were treated to a free production of “Hairspray!” at the Clayton Youth Center. Hobart Award winner Nikki Dyke had invited us and our spouses, and we got to see her put the finishing touches on a terrific musical. I was amazed at the talented voices, the sets, and the high quality of the whole production. You still have time to see this, and I encourage you to get tickets and treat yourself and your spouse/date/friends to a fun evening!

We'll make this an annual event, to allow Board members the chance to get to know our grantees and let the non-profits show off their great work!
