This is the month to celebrate philanthropy!
November is Nonprofit Month, has a week dedicated to community foundations (Nov. 12-18) and celebrates National Philanthropy Day Nov. 15.
NCCF has administered the distribution of more than $68 million in grants and scholarships over the past 24 years, and last year alone distributed $7.4 million through 2,104 grants and scholarships! That’s a lot to celebrate!
We’re presenting a feature called “The ABC’s of Affiliate Work,” which was culled from one-liners presented on most of our affiliate foundations’ work this past year at our Affiliate Forum held in October. What better way to acknowledge this month-long salute to philanthropy in all of its many forms?!
To raise money for its unrestricted grantmaking fund, the Alleghany County Community Foundation holds an annual wine tasting and dinner that has been well attended by fundholders, past board members and community leaders; these dinners have raised more than $10,000 over the past two years.
The Avery Community Foundation has focused on addressing the issue of college affordability by creating a new fund dedicated to providing college scholarships to Avery County students.
The Beaufort-Hyde Community Foundation, as a result of responding to needs from Hurricane Irene, has become more informed and engaged in efforts to support local food pantries and the Food Bank of the Albemarle, which provides services throughout the northeast region of North Carolina.
The Bertie-Hertford Community Foundation created greater awareness within a large donor and fundholder group, helping them to re-focus efforts to grow existing endowed funds, while at the same time providing disaster relief services following tornadoes and Hurricane Irene.
The Carteret Community Foundation continued its excellence in fundraising capabilities with its spring golf tournament and participation in the annual local seafood festival to increase their funds for grant distribution.
The Cary Community Foundation has adopted eight strategic initiatives for 2012 and is harnessing the work of an active committee system to accomplish each one.
The Catawba Valley Community Foundation helped initiate and hosts a Capital Campaign Review Committee for Catawba County made up of local funders, business and nonprofit leaders. The committee enables local nonprofits to better coordinate major fundraising campaigns.
The Cherokee County Community Foundation collaborated with the NCCF state board of directors to ensure that disaster relief funds were available to meet community needs after the spring tornadoes.
The Chowan Community Funds has reached out to educate nonprofits and donors through special programs and has engaged in community conversations led by the Golden Leaf Foundation that will benefit the community.
The Clay County Community Foundation board collaborated with local officials and The Golden Leaf Foundation to ensure the local affiliate had a place at the table during recent grant meetings.
The Columbus County Community Foundation made $5,000 in grants to six local nonprofits.
The Craven County Community Foundation reaped the benefit of years of outreach to professional advisors by celebrating the creatopm of two significant funds established through estate gifts. (one in excess of $1 million, the second in excess of $4.5 million).
The Duplin County Community Foundation once again partnered with the Muscadine Harvest Festival Benefit to raise money for the local endowment fund.
The Eastern Band of Cherokees Community Foundation connected their grants committee with the committee of a local fund to ensure a grant to the local hospital to benefit children.
The Edgecombe Charitable Foundation uses its grant funds and scholarships to specifically focus on educational enrichment in Edgecombe County. Grants range from engineering camps to library books to a new scholarship fund for nursing students.
The Franklin County Community Foundation has two grants cycles – one from their unrestricted endowment and one set up especially for Franklin County public school teachers. This gives the affiliate board the unique opportunity to grant out and support the community twice during the year.
The Graham County Community Foundation collaborated with the GREAT organization – Graham Revitalization Economic Action Team -- to promote building endowments to strengthen Graham County.
The Greene County Community Foundation held their annual Mardi Gras' Open House and exceeded their previous fundraising efforts while WOWING the guests with their culinary talents!
