Reach Out Rocky Mount has announced the total for this year’s Fun Run for Charities -- a record $463,104!

The 2011 total reflects the dedication of all those involved in the annual event and the unity of the Rocky Mount community. It also brings the total amount raised for nonprofits since the event began in 2009 to $1,170,576!

Rocky Mount’s great event is an example of the power of community, according to Kelly Lee, Coastal Plain associate. “Collaboration is the best way to raise funds to support nonprofits at a time when they need it the most,” she said.

The many nonprofits that received grants this year from the Fun Run’s proceeds enjoyed a celebration on July 19, when they were recognized and awarded their funds.

Organizations that received grants include: Autism Society of North Carolina, Boys & Girls Club of Nash-Edgecombe Counties, Good Shepherd Day School, Community Hospice Foundation, Tar River Civic Club, Friends of the Arts Center, Rocky Mount Family YMCA and the National Federation of the Blind of North Carolina, just to name a few. More than 50 organizations received grants!

Money will go to an array of initiatives to better the community of Rocky Mount. Funds will: aid youth programs in a variety of organizations, support spay and neuter programs, facilitate a summer reading program at a local library, provide a pediatric emergency care center, help feed the needy in the area and more.

This year’s success is a culmination of the hard work that began a few years ago. Fun Run for Charities is put on by Reach Out Rocky Mount, a group of citizens who joined together in 2008, all dedicated to supporting the nonprofit community in the Rocky Mount area. The group began with the desire to grow and sustain the vital nonprofits in their city, while also cultivating philanthropy and community among its citizens.

Reach Out Rocky Mount decided to accomplish its goals through an innovative fundraiser to bring donors and volunteers alike together in a fun atmosphere of collaboration. Their volunteer board aligned with NCCF, which now manages the Reach Out Rocky Mount Endowment fund and the gift fund for Fun Run for Charities.

Reach Out Rocky Mount’s growing event includes races, a walk, a fun run, a nonprofit fair and more, guaranteeing there is something for everyone. This year’s event took place on May 14, at the Imperial Centre in Rocky Mount. For more information visit:
