Youth
Our Youth in Philanthropy initiative is designed to engage young people in civic and community decision-making while strengthening their understanding of philanthropy. We partner with donors, local volunteers, school administrators and youth organizations to help students realize their potential for giving back to their communities. We offer short- and long-term programs targeting grades from kindergarten through high school.
Our ten-month program allows youth grant-makers to increase their financial literacy, participate in career and job-training activities, connect on educational issues, build leadership skills, develop creative and analytical thinking and nourish community involvement through hands-on life experiences.
Along with our partners, Leading to Change and NCGives, we teach young people to give responsibly. Our goal is to create a new generation of philanthropists. Our focus is on helping young people make an impact on their communities through philanthropy and to develop the skills they will need in the future as employers, employees, civic leaders and strong community citizens.
Programs currently operate in these communities:
- Catawba
- Edgecombe
- Nash
- Northampton
- Wake
- Wilkes
- Vance
Our Collective Giving Program, the shorter of the two programs, can span one to three sessions and is specifically designed to introduce our younger constituents to the concept of philanthropy, incorporating children’s literature as the basis for learning. Children participate in hands-on activities and a collective-giving project that allows them as a group to decide where their contributions are directed.
