Title: Table matters: An affiliate board member experience in three acts

Time: 10:20-10:50 a.m.

Speakers: Colby Martin and Dawn Neighbors, NCCF Community Leadership Officers

Board development is multi-faceted. This can be especially true in the work of a community foundation whose purpose is to make lasting positive change. In this session, you are invited to take a unique visual journey through an affiliate board member experience: from joining the table, to the room where it happens and into the community. This session answers the questions posed by many board members: “What do I do?” and “How do I do it?”

Title: Trends in philanthropy: Nonprofit needs now and in the future

Time: 10:55-11:45 a.m.

Speakers: Tyran Hill, NCCF Director of Community Investment (moderator), Jennifer Tolle Whiteside, NCCF President & CEO, Jeanne Tedrow, President and CEO, North Carolina Center for Nonprofits, Merald Holloway, Partnership Manager for MDC’s Rural Forward program

In this session, panelists will discuss the trends in nonprofit needs across the state. Learn how to better support nonprofits who are directly meeting the needs of their communities each day and how NCCF is adapting to the changing landscapes to better serve our grantee partners.

Dig in to the Criteria for Success! Tables will be assigned a focus area from the Criteria for Success, so you can choose to sit at a table with a topic that most interests you. You’ll be able to dig deeper into the table topic with your affiliate peers over lunch, share strategies for success and lessons learned!

About the Criteria for Success: The goal of NCCF’s affiliates is to be the local face of philanthropy – to inspire individuals and organizations to make meaningful contributions to their communities. To accomplish this goal, affiliates use the Criteria for Success strategic plan each year to prioritize goals and activities around core focus areas:

  • Developing a strong and committed board that is representative of the community it serves
  • Inspiring and promoting local philanthropy to grow assets and the affiliate “Family of Funds”
  • Conducting an effective grantmaking program for greatest impact
  • Demonstrating leadership as a catalyst or convener for pressing community needs
  • Communicating about your affiliate in your community

Investments Update: Join this table for an update on investments and Q&A with NCCF's Chief Financial and Administrative Officer Wilson Simmons.

Title: Growing better together: Planting seeds today for trees tomorrow

Time: 1-1:45 p.m.

Speakers: Chris Ford, Chowan Community Funds Foundation Board Member and Ford Family Charitable Fund, David Harman, Watauga County Community Foundation Board Membee and Don and Audrey Bentley Scholarship Fund, Sue Haberberger, Young Moore Henderson Attorney and Shareholder, Beth Boney Jenkins, Jake Pope and Megan Lynch Ellis, NCCF Development Officers

When seeds are planted by our affiliate boards, those seeds grow to become strongly-rooted trees of impact that support our local communities. In this session, learn from donors and advisors about why and how they became engaged with their local affiliate - and how you can replicate their success.

Topic: Connecting Our State Through Community

Time: 1:55-2:30 p.m.

Speaker: Deborah Holt Noel, a veteran news media professional with over 20 years of experience in writing, producing, and hosting for radio and television. She is a senior producer and host of two prominent weekly series at PBS North Carolina:

  • Black Issues Forum, a weekly public affairs series about topics and issues relevant to Black communities in North Carolina; and

Title: Promoting your affiliate: Tools you can use to boost visibility

Speaker: Amy Dominello Braun, NCCF Chief Marketing & Communications Officer

Time: 2:30-3:15 p.m.

This session will outline available tools provided by NCCF that you can use to promote your affiliate. We’ll talk about best practices for sharing information digitally and new print materials that highlight information about your affiliate.
