Kayla Josey from Newport, recipient of the Carteret County Retired School Personnel Scholarship, is the next student in our Scholar Spotlight series. Kayla graduated from West Carteret High School and now attends East Carolina University. Kayla is a first-generation college student and is following her passion for music by majoring in music education. She’s excited to be a member of the ECU marching band and to take advantage of everything the School of Music has to offer.

Kayla hopes to one day teach middle or high school band and inspire students the same way her past band directors have inspired her. “My high school band director, Craig Everett, inspired me the most to pursue music as a career,” she said. “I admire his teaching and his knowledge of music. He cared so deeply about his students and always put them first,” she said. “Throughout high school he always encouraged me to do my absolute best and to follow my dreams of becoming a high school band director.”

Kayla is grateful to the donors of the Carteret County Retired School Personnel Scholarship for helping her reach her goals.
