Surry Orthopaedic Endowment accepting grant applications

The Surry Orthopaedic Endowment, a fund of the North Carolina Community Foundation, is currently accepting grant applications.

This endowment supports charitable causes in Surry County with a preference and focus on youth health, injury prevention and safety. Funds can be requested by public charities, schools, religious organizations and government programs.

Grants range from $250 to $1,000. A grant committee will determine grant awards, which will be distributed in late 2022. Applications will be accepted through Sept. 30, 2022.

Over the past two years, the endowment has provided funds to:

  • Elkin Emergency Rescue Squad to purchase supplies and equipment for the care and prevention of injuries to children
  • Elkin High School for protective gear for high school sports teams
  • Grace Clinic of Yadkin Valley for general use, with a preference for youth/young adult injury prevention and treatment
  • Old Hickory Council, Boy Scouts of America, for injury prevention and safety of the Boy Scouts

“The Elkin Emergency Rescue Squad purchased equipment that will be used to take care of our smaller pediatric patients when we have football standbys if the need arises,” said William Rountree, captain of the squad. “Pediatric patients need premium care and we will be able to provide that service with this equipment.”

Josh Pardue, an Elkin High School teacher and the athletic director, said the school used their $1,000 grant to buy face shields for football helmets and gaiter face coverings for all winter and spring sport athletes during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This high-quality gear met COVID regulations and kept our kids safe,” he said. “It allowed us to play sports in a crazy year.”
