About Frances Mae Carawan

Frances Mae Carawan

Frances Mae Carawan loved education, children, books, music and history. She valued an educated citizenry, truth and high morals and felt that they help democracy work for all people. She also believed that the arts significantly contribute to a good quality of life and lived out that philosophy by teaching and performing music.

Her parents, Henry B. and Janie Carawan, were both teachers in Lowland, N.C., and stressed the importance of education. As a college student, Frances majored in piano and minored in public school music at Greensboro College in Greensboro, N.C. She received a Master of Arts from East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., studied at The Julliard School in New York City, and then taught public school music in Florida.

She had friends from many walks of life and across the economic spectrum, playing piano for former North Carolina Gov. James Hunt and corresponding with Loonis McGlohon, co-author (with newscaster Charles Kuralt) of “North Carolina Is My Home.” With her birthday falling on St. Patrick’s Day, she embraced her Irish heritage and enjoyed trips to Ireland, watching parades in Dublin and posing by a statue of Irish author James Joyce.

After retiring to Charlotte, she cared for her father for more than 25 years. All the while, she retained a heart for helping students reach their potential and expressed her desire to provide scholarships for students who needed financial assistance to attend college, especially students from her home county of Pamlico, on the coast of North Carolina.
