About Dr. Al Swan

A native of Cherokee County and a graduate of Andrews High School, Dr. Swan received an undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as well as a PhD in Physiology and Biochemistry.

With a military career spanning 30 years of service with the Army Air Corps and Air Force, Dr. Swan’s accomplishments included work at the Pentagon, Kirkland Air Force Base and Aerospace Medicine. He also received the Legion of Merit, the National Defense Service Medal and the Distinguished Service Medal.

Dr. Swan’s oldest daughter Mary Elizabeth shared: At a meeting called to determine the feasibility of a large project, the general conducting asked every man around the table for their thoughts on whether the project was possible. All said no except one. This man answered that it might take a little more time to come up with a solution, but he thought it could be accomplished with effort and teamwork. The general looked at the man and said, “You work for Al Swan, don’t you?”

“This was my father’s attitude throughout his life and he infused this belief into everyone around him,” said Mary Elizabeth.

After working in cities across the nation, Dr. Swan returned to Cherokee County to take over administration of the local hospital where he enjoyed being with his wife, two daughters and six grandchildren. He also found peace as a member of the Andrews United Methodist Church.

“He touched many lives with his generous spirit,” said daughter Caroline Swan. “The Dr. Al Swan Memorial Endowment scholarship has allowed his impact to continue.”
