Eligible applicants are girls who are graduates of a Haywood County High School seeking a degree in education from an accredited college or university.  Applicants must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or above during their senior year and should have an SAT score of at least 1400 out of 2200.  Financial need and evidence of good character will be strongly considered. This scholarship is awarded in alternating years to a student from Pisgah High School or Tuscola High School.

About

Members of the Alpha Rho chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary organization for women educators, established this scholarship in memory of two longtime members of the Haywood County chapter, Harriet Phoenix and Margeret Chambers.

When they passed away, Harriet and Margeret bequeathed their Haywood County home to the Alpha Rho chapter. The chapter used the proceeds from the sale of the home to establish the Phoenix/Chambers Memorial Scholarship Endowment at the North Carolina Community Foundation.

The mission of Alpha Delta Kappa is to empower women educators to advance inclusion, educational excellence, altruism and world understanding. The Phoenix/Chambers Memorial Scholarship honors this mission by encouraging women to pursue one of the many rewarding careers within education – being a teacher, principal, guidance counselor or librarian.

Members of Alpha Rho support one another, engage their community to make a difference, and provide leadership and networking opportunities. Scholarship recipients benefit from an ongoing connection to chapter members for support and advice.
