About Meme Mckensie Brown and the "Fight Like A Girl" Fund

Meme Mckensie BrownMeme Mckensie Brown had a contagious smile that won the hearts of everyone she met – her life focused on faith, family, friends, and fun. Her many accomplishments included athletics (basketball, volleyball, track); academics (high honors and National Honor Society); and 12 years of perfect attendance for Sunday school at Boonville Baptist Church.

Meme received volleyball and academic scholarships to attend Lees-McRae College. She then transferred to Appalachian State University to study nursing when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Her father, David Brown, describes her as optimistic, sparkling, strong and positive even when faced with fighting cancer. She enjoyed life and lived every day to the fullest.

Meme passed away at the age of 21 after a courageous battle. The “Fight Like a Girl Fund” has grown from a one-time $500 scholarship for one school, to an endowed scholarship awarding yearly $2,000 awards to both Forbush High School and Starmount High School students. This fund continues Meme’s legacy and recognizes students based on their personality and merit.
