WGN awards $120,500 in 2014

The Women’s Giving Network of Wake County awarded $120,500 to four area nonprofits that support women and/or children on Wednesday, according to Pamela Dowdy, president of the local giving circle, which is a program of the North Carolina Community Foundation (NCCF).

An award of $45,000 was given to InterAct to help give support to victims of domestic violence. Note in the Pocket received $38,500 to help provide clothing to children in need. Haven House Services, which provides programs to help struggling youth, was granted $27,000. Rounding out the awards was NC Arts in Action, which received $10,000 to help enrich the lives of children through performing arts. The awards were announced Nov. 12 at the Network’s annual luncheon.

In 2013, the Women’s Giving Network awarded $100,000. Grants Committee Chair Marilyn Stevens said she was thrilled that the group could award more money than last year and support more organizations. “But that did not make the selection process any easier, because there are so many outstanding programs in Wake County,” she said.

This year’s grants from the Women’s Giving Network bring the total of contributions awarded to area nonprofits to $901,500 in just eight years. “We’re proud that the Network continues to expand and that this allows the group to provide even more meaningful gifts to make a difference in the lives of women and children in Wake County,” said Jennifer Tolle Whiteside, president and CEO of the NCCF. The NCCF supports nine other women’s giving programs across North Carolina and the statewide Women’s Fund of North Carolina.
