North Carolina Local News Lab Fund announces COVID-19 news and information grants

The North Carolina Local News Lab Fund, a pooled fund with partners including Democracy Fund and The Educational Foundation of America administered by the North Carolina Community Foundation, recently issued a call for proposals that address the short-term operating needs of organizations and the threat the pandemic represents to North Carolina residents, community public health and civic infrastructure. The NC Local News Lab Fund will grant up to $300,000 in total during this round.

To best serve those needs, the NC Local News Lab Fund will be awarding general operating grants up to $30,000 to public charity nonprofit entities that serve North Carolina residents and their rapidly evolving information needs. General operating grants will provide organizations the flexibility they need to respond to the needs of their communities at this moment.

For profit organizations with a public charity nonprofit fiscal sponsor are also welcome to apply for a project specific grant up to $30,000. Those projects should reflect service of community news and information needs and funding priorities to be considered.

The North Carolina Local News Lab Fund knows this funding isn’t enough to support the work that needs to be done for the state right now or the volume of grant requests anticipated, according to Lizzy Hazeltine, fund coordinator. “Local news is critical public infrastructure, especially during a crisis like this when we rely on this information to guide our daily habits and understand the broader impacts of what is happening in our communities,” she said. “We welcome more partners to join us in funding reliable, accessible reporting and information for North Carolina residents through contributions to our pooled fund at The North Carolina Community Foundation or coordinated funding that meets community information needs.”

The North Carolina Local News Lab Fund was established at the North Carolina Community Foundation in 2017 by a group of local and national funders who believe in the power of local journalism, local stories and local people to strengthen our democracy. The mission of the Fund is to ensure that all North Carolinians have access to the news and information they need to make their communities thrive.

The Fund pursues that mission with an ecosystem strategy that combines grantmaking with programming to build resilience and sustainability in the news and information network while encouraging deep service to local communities. The model also seeks to advance the effectiveness of philanthropy in this sector by aligning grantmaking with the pooled fund and creating opportunities for funders to learn about the importance of local news and information for vibrant civic life.
