About Livingston and Cohildia Lyons

The family of Livingston and Cohildia Lyons created this scholarship endowment as a way to honor and remember them for their longtime service to the Raeford community. Livingston and Cohildia met while attending N.C. A&T State University, and they knew the value of education firsthand since they were the only ones in their immediate families to attend college.

Throughout their lives in Raeford, they mentored, encouraged and supported many people in the community. Their nephew Larry Bonner said Aunt Co was a member of the civic league, and Uncle Livingston was superintendent of the Sunday school, which meant they knew a lot of children in the community and often had a car full on the way home from church on Sundays. They offered guidance, advice, support and discipline to the children, and Larry said many of them have gone on to be very successful in life.

The late Dr. Hubert A. Peterkin, who was the longtime sheriff of Hoke County, once told Larry that Livingston’s encouragement and mentoring had changed his life for the better and helped lead him to become sheriff.

This scholarship provides financial support and also follows the principles of servant leadership, which Livingston and Cohildia exemplified, by building mentor relationships with the scholars to strengthen their academic experiences.
