When we hear a question often or when we hear a really good question even once, we want to make the answer available to everyone. We think doing so makes the applications, and therefore, this program stronger. You may have a question that you can find the answer to on this list, or if not, we encourage you to take a look at the all of the questions and answers anyway. You might find an answer you didn't know you needed.
How do I decide whether to apply for program/project funding or for general operating support?
This choice is an important one, because several responses in the application are guided by this selection.
General operating support is funding that an organization uses for its core/general operations which allows the organization to continue to operate and meet its mission. Grants for this purpose may be used for any cost that keeps the organization operating, unless otherwise restricted at the time of the grant, which generally permits some flexibility for the grantee.
Program/project support is funding for specific, mission-related programs, projects, and initiatives that the organization is undertaking. They may fall within the core operations, but they have a clearly defined goal and typically have a set beginning and end. Grants for this purpose only cover costs directly related to the program/project for which the application is made.
We are applying for a program that is a regular, ongoing program of our organization. What should I enter as the program/project begin and end dates?
If the program for which you are applying is one that is always ongoing, then you would enter your organization’s fiscal year dates as the program/project begin and end dates. You will want to make that schedule clear in your narrative responses.
Why aren’t schools and churches eligible for funding?
The Louise Oriole Burevitch Endowment makes grants to schools and churches, according to Mrs. Burevitch’s giving history. This program is designed to make grants to nonprofit organizations, and certainly, if a school or a church is working with a nonprofit partner, that organization can apply for funding to support a collaborative effort.
Please note that the restriction for schools (public and private) also extends to fundraising/foundation arms of schools, colleges and universities, as well as foundations and/or nonprofit organizations housed in and/or administered by the schools, colleges or universities where the school receives direct benefit from the administration of that program.
Please also note that the restriction against fundraising/foundation arms also extends to government entities as the program does not accept applications from government entities.
What if a school or a church has 501c3 status?
Being a 501c3 is only where eligibility begins for an organization, but then, eligibility ends when an organization or its proposal falls within the program’s restrictions.
I see that the fund is restricted against capital campaigns. Are requests for capital expenses accepted?
Grants are restricted against expenses that fall within an active (or planned) capital campaign. Capital expenses that are not part of active (or planned) campaigns are allowable.
What does the term “re-granting” mean?
Grants will not be made in the case where the grantee will then use the funding to facilitate its own grant program. For some organizations, distributing funds to individuals in need based on an application process is core to their mission and operations, and a rare exception may be made for those organizations.
We are in the midst of an ongoing project that we are funding through a loan. Can a grant from this program be used to pay back that loan?
No. Grants are not awarded for the repayment of loans or for expenses that have already been incurred by the organization.
Our organization just completed a project, and we are still working to raise funds to pay for the expenses. May we apply for funding the project which is already completed?
No. Grants are not awarded for reimbursement of costs already incurred. Grants are only available for work/costs which occur after the submission deadline of your application.
Are programs and services for the arts or the environment eligible for funding?
The Endowment only supports programs and services that directly benefit education, health, and human services as a primary outcome. If activities related to arts or the environment are a component of the program or service, that may be considered, but the primary goals must fall within the Endowment's defined focus areas.
