Jesus Ramos-Tellez
Growing up, Jesus Ramos-Tellez was raised on the phrase “Echale ganas,” which means putting in effort no matter what. That determination became essential after Hurricane Helene flooded his family’s home in Marion, leaving behind major damage. Every dollar since has gone toward rebuilding, from replacing flooring to repairing heating systems, making college costs even harder to manage.
“Since our income was limited, my family has had to use what little we have to cover essential expenses, including some college costs and transportation,” Jesus said. “Balancing part-time work while commuting to school has been really tough, making it uncertain if I will have enough for the 2025-2026 school year.”
A first-generation college student, Jesus is now attending McDowell Technical and Community College, studying Information Technology. After gaining experience in the tech field, he hopes to transfer his skills and open a recreation center offering affordable programs for youth and adults. Beyond that, he plans to pursue ventures such as real estate investment to further support his community.
Alongside his studies, Jesus works with his father at Appalachian Stone and serves as a sports instructor and wellness coach at the YMCA. He was also a four-year varsity soccer player at McDowell High School and has been active in the Latinx Leaders club.
The North Carolina Community Foundation’s Disaster Relief and Resilience Scholarship has been essential in easing the financial burden caused by Hurricane Helene’s impact, allowing Jesus to focus more fully on his education and goals.
“My determination to help children and adults, combined with the generosity of this scholarship, gives me the strength and focus to pursue my goals,” Jesus said. “I am deeply grateful for this support and for the opportunity to give back to my community through my work and future endeavors.”
