Cherokee County Community Foundation spotlights High Lonesome Therapeutic Riding Center
In 2023 the Cherokee County Community Foundation granted funds to High Lonesome Therapeutic Riding Center in Murphy, N.C. Board members visited the farm to see the wonderful work being done there to provide therapeutic experiences via horseback riding.

Lauren Dilts, executive director of the center, brings an amazing skillset to High Lonesome. She is a registered nurse with pediatric, rehabilitation and critical care experience. Dilts is certified through the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International as a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor and Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning.
Along with a corps of trained and dedicated volunteers, High Lonesome is providing therapeutic riding and equine therapy experiences for children with disabilities, veterans, and people suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Dilts explained that horseback riding provides the rider a vast array of therapeutic tools which improve strength, balance, coordination and self-confidence. Riding can also reduce anxiety and often provides pure joy.
High Lonesome also developed a Special Olympics Team that competed at the state level in 2023. Seven of High Lonesome’s athletes brought home 16 podium finishes. Six coaches and 13 volunteers made this experience possible.
High Lonesome is providing a unique learning and therapy environment in a very underserved community. CCCF was proud to support this program.
