Currituck-Dare Community Foundation awards local grants (July 2013)
The Currituck-Dare Community Foundation hosted the annual awards program on behalf of the C-D Community Fund and the Currituck-Dare Woman’s’ Fund at the Currituck Library in Barco.
Sheila Tyler, president, welcomed everyone to the program and presented the awards on behalf of the Community Fund. This year’s nonprofit recipients include:
Albemarle Hopeline received a grant of $800 to help with Project CHANGE in Currituck County. Patricia Youngblood, Executive Directo,r received the grant and provided additional information about this program and its impact in Currituck.
Children At Play Museum received a grant of $425 to help with a new ‘Dig This’ exhibit. Alyssa Hansen, executive director, received the award and shared information about their experiences this past year with impacts from Hurricane Sandy, the loss of so many exhibits and materials, relocation to a new and higher site across the highway and the rebuilding efforts to date.
Currituck Free Dental Clinic was awarded a grant of $555 toward the cost of supplies. This clinic continues to serve many individuals from all over the region, many of whom cannot afford dental care.
The Tidewater Boy Scout Council received a grant of $300 to provide day camp scholarships to local children with financial needs. Senior District Executive Dana Mott received the grant, along with Larry Proctor, volunteer district leader.
Food Bank of the Albemarle received a grant of $800 to support the local Food Sourcing program. Liz Reasoner, executive director. received the award and provided information about how this program is working and expanding in its second year.
Kids First, Inc, received a grant of $500 toward a new training program, “Darkness to Light” to benefit abused children. Rhonda Morris, executive direcotr, received the grant and spoke about the services they provide in all seven counties, including Dare and Currituck.
Mane and Tail Therapeutic Horsemanship Academy received a grant of $500 toward preparation of participants for the Special Olympics Equestrian Games of 2013. Receiving the grant was board member Patricia Rippin and volunteer Abigail Rippin.
Nancy Proctor, president of the Currituck-Dare Woman’s Fund, presented three grants on behalf of the giving circle’s fund. The primary focus of this group’s grantmaking is to support programs and services that improve the lives of women and children. Receiving these grants were: Kids First, Inc. a grant of $1000, for the “Darkness to Light” program; Albemarle Hopeline, a grant of $500 for Project CHANGE; and Food Bank of the Albemarle, a grant of $500 to support the Food Sourcing Program.
Nancy invited women who are interested in supporting these needs to become members of the women’s giving circle. Two friends or family members can share a membership in the giving circle at a membership donation level of $200 per year. The members all vote to determine the annual grant awards.
The Currituck-Dare Woman’s Fund is a component fund administered by the North Carolina Community Foundation.
Sheila Tyler asked Lynne Alterman to give a brief summary from the successful Duck and Wine Festival. Lynne mentioned several grants were made to benefit the three charitable partners and as prizes for the two first place chef awards. The fund netted nearly $15,000 for charitable purposes. Tyler thanked the community for support of the Currituck-Dare Community Foundation. “These grants are important to our community and our quality of life,” she said. “Critical programs would not be possible without the generosity of many individuals and organizations that have supported the 22 endowed funds supported by Currituck-Dare Community Foundation.”
