Having just graduated from college, I’m in that terrifying/exciting part of my life where my future seems like nothing but a list of possibilities.  I spend a lot of time thinking about where I want to go, what I want to do and who I want to be, and the picture’s not crystal clear yet. Sure, I have a general idea of what kind of career I’d like to have – something with writing or communications – but that doesn’t really narrow down my options much.

However, being an intern at the NCCF has helped me find a little more direction. I’m now certain that whatever I end up doing, I want it to be something that helps people. I’ve had a great time these past two months learning and writing about the generosity and kindness of people in our community and across the state. I got my degree in journalism, but I’ve become slightly disillusioned by what seems like constant negativity in the news. However, I’ve found that at the NCCF I don’t just write about problems, I write about things being done to fix them. It feels good to give credit to and publicize the people and organizations that are doing things to make their communities better places. And I feel that by getting the word out about local philanthropy I’ll encourage others to get involved too, and play a small part in positive change.

Another thing that has helped me come to this decision is the staff at the NCCF. One of the first things I noticed on my first day was how happy everyone seemed. This wasn’t just a temporary occurrence caused by free muffins in the break room. Every day, the staff members of the NCCF are genuinely excited to do their jobs.  And I figure if I find a job where I’m as excited as they are just to show up for work, I’ll be heading in the right direction.
