Martin County Community Foundation awards local scholarships
The Martin County Community Foundation Board announces the first scholarship awards from the Meredith Griffin Revels Scholarship Fund. Established in 2011 from the estate of Nancy Sexton, the Meredith Griffin Revels Scholarship Fund honors the all too short life of Meredith G. Revels. She was a Martin County native and a 1997 graduate of Williamston High School and known for her bright smile, giving spirit and contagious personality.
Meredith pursued her passion to help others and earned her BSN in nursing from East Carolina University in 2002. Her career as a nurse was cut short but she loved her job as a postpartum floor nurse at Pitt Memorial Hospital.
Nancy Sexton left instructions in her estate to establish this scholarship fund in honor of Meredith Griffin Revels and stipulated that this scholarship would be used to help residents of Martin County pursue a or complete a degree in nursing or a related medical field. The board of the Martin County Community Foundation has the responsibility of selecting students for this scholarship.
The board has selected the following students to receive the first awards from this fund: Haley Riffle for an award of $2,500 and Jesse Rogers for an award of $1,000. Haley Riffle is enrolled at Campbell University in a medical related field of study. Jesse Rogers is enrolling at Gardner-Webb University in a Nursing program.
On behalf of the board, Simon Griffin, President, said, “We are thrilled to recognize these outstanding students with these scholarships. It is an honor to see the wishes of Nancy Sexton fulfilled to help others achieve their educational goals in this important field of study.”
