Students at Raleigh Charter High School recently established a fund at the North Carolina Community Foundation to support the creation of a local monument to North Carolina’s victims of lynching.

The students, all members of the RCHS Freedom Struggle Committee, are committed to developing a permanent public acknowledgement to the many victims of lynching in the state. They have been working since 2016 with community leaders and local government officials to make that vision a reality. What began as a class project has evolved into a commitment to recognizing the truths about our state’s history.

The United States has a history of genocide fueled by white supremacy, according to Melani Winter, RCHS history teacher and faculty advisor to the Freedom Struggle Committee. “The Committee knows through countless hours of research and work with historians and experts that over 120 known lynchings were reported in North Carolina from 1860 to 1950 in letters, newspapers, and postcards,” she said. “These events were sanctioned by the government and endorsed by the community.”

The students hope to continue educating the community, building public support for the monument and welcome contributions to the fund. Anyone interested in supporting the Memorializing N.C. Lynching Victims Fund are invited to visit this page to donate online. Gifts to the fund may also be sent via mail to North Carolina Community Foundation, Memorializing N.C. Lynching Victims Fund, 3737 Glenwood Ave., Suite 460, Raleigh, NC 27612.

The Foundation is inspired by the community philanthropy of the students, according to Jennifer Tolle Whiteside, NCCF CEO and president. “We’re honored to steward these funds and serve as a partner for these student leaders,” she said. “Witnessing philanthropy at such a young age reminds us all to recommit to helping our communities in any way we can.”

Note: This fund was closed in July 2023.
