Revitalizing Sam Brown Mountain Park: Community, Commitment, and a Clear Trail Ahead

Thanks to local leadership, community volunteers and generous support, Sam Brown Mountain Park in Alleghany County is flourishing once again.

The Alleghany Sparta Trail Association received approval from the Alleghany County Commissioners to begin a much-needed revitalization of Sam Brown Mountain Park. An important component of the project was the restoration of a three-mile scenic trail that welcomes runners, walkers, and families alike.

Over time, and especially following the damage caused by Hurricane Helene, the trail had become largely impassable. Downed trees and storm debris left the area in disrepair, essentially cutting off access to this natural community space.

Before: Downed trees and debris from Hurricane Helene blocked access to much of the trail.

To support the effort, the Alleghany Community Foundation recommended a $25,000 grant from the NC Community Foundation’s Disaster Relief Fund to aid in cleanup and restoration. That funding helped fuel the passion and labor of community volunteers who came together to literally clear the path forward. Fallen trees were removed, debris cleared, and a clear path ahead was forged into a space that had been dormant for too long.

The restored trail is already being imprinted with footprints from hikers, families and neighbors enjoying time outdoors. And for restful moments, the trail also features outdoor picnic tables, ADA-compliant benches, and designated meditation areas for quiet reflection.
