Supporting food security in North Carolina

Disruptions and reductions in government funding are impacting essential services across North Carolina communities. Nonprofits are facing mounting challenges in providing services and having to make tough decisions about staffing and programs. Many are experiencing an immediate need for additional funding due to an increase in demand for services.

As of the date of publication of this post, cuts and delays to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) mean many people are having a more difficult time accessing food. More than 1.4 million North Carolinians use SNAP to help put nutritious food on the table, including over 580,000 children. One in six North Carolinians living in rural communities benefit from SNAP, meaning our rural communities are hit especially hard.

While households receiving assistance will feel these cuts directly, our regional food banks, local food pantries, meal programs and nonprofits will face increased demand and challenges.

As you contemplate your year-end giving and grantmaking, consider making a grant from your donor advised fund to one of North Carolina’s regional food banks to combat this immediate need. Giving strategically in uncertain times is important to help stabilize nonprofits and allow them to continue to support people in need. More ways to support North Carolina’s nonprofits.
