Swain County Community Foundation awards more than $11,000 in grants

The Swain County Community Foundation (SCCF) has awarded $11,220 in grants to programs supporting the local community.

The board of advisors granted:

  • $1,800 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina for Reigniting the Power of Youth
  • $1,500 to Bryson City Food Pantry for general operating support
  • $1,500 Hawthorn Heights WNC, Inc. for recreational activities
  • $1,200 to HIGHTS for transportation costs for mediation services
  • $850 to Mountain Projects for advertising open enrollment signup for ACA health insurance for 2023
  • $500 to North Carolina Symphony for a virtual interactive stage for Swain County students
  • $570 to Prevent Blindness North Carolina for Star Pupils Swain County
  • $2,800 The Giving Spoon for general operating support
  • $500 to TROSA (Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers, Inc.) for residential substance abuse recovery services for individuals from Swain County

Funds for the grants came from SCCF’s community grantmaking fund, and the Youth Are Our Future Endowment.

“We are proud to support these efforts with funding and appreciate the good work that these organizations do,” said Karen Proctor, advisory board president of the Swain County Community Foundation.

SCCF is an affiliate of the North Carolina Community Foundation and is led by a local volunteer advisory board. Each year, SCCF uses dollars from its endowment funds to make grants to local nonprofit organizations.

Advisory board members live and work in Swain County, positioning them to strategically leverage resources, meet local needs and access opportunities. In addition to Proctor, board members include Christine Roth (vice president), Cindy Allison Thompson (secretary/treasurer), Terry Bevino, Janine Crisp, Regina Mathis, Misty Sneed and Carol Sussman.
