The Womens Fund Of North Carolina Made 17500 In Grants Supporting Domestic Violence Programs

The Women’s Fund of North Carolina recently made $17,500 in grants to nonprofit organizations across the state that are providing domestic violence services and programs for women. These grants are in direct response to surging needs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Grants issued were:

$5,000 to the NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence Night of Safety Fund
$2,500 to the Albemarle Hopeline
$2,500 to InterAct
$2,500 to KIRAN
$2,500 to the Outer Banks Hotline
$2,500 to Roanoke Chowan SAFE

The Women’s Fund of North Carolina is a program of the North Carolina Community Foundation and supports the changing and diverse issues, needs and challenges facing women throughout the state. The Fund’s grants committee is comprised of representatives of the following NCCF’s local women’s giving networks: Bertie-Hertford Women's Fund, Cary Women's Giving Network, Currituck-Dare Women's Fund, Women Givers of Northeast NC and Women's Giving Network of Wake County.

Many survivors of domestic violence are not safe at home and face tremendous barriers to seeking and receiving help and the pandemic and social isolation can make things even worse and add additional obstacles, according to Carianne Fisher, executive director of the NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence. “When some service providers began to report increases in calls of 100% or more over the same period last year, we knew we needed to find innovative ways to assist survivors seeking safety,” she said. “The Night of Safety Fund was designed to assist advocates in these important efforts.”

Kiran, Inc. based in Wake County is seeing a similar surge in need, according to Sangeetha Menon, executive director. “Survivors are facing one of the toughest challenges of their lives with lost wages and many new challenges,” she said. “This award will be so helpful in providing them with monetary relief in the form of rent assistance, groceries, mental health services and childcare expenses.”
