About Charles Reid Ross

C. Reid RossCharles Reid Ross was a titan of North Carolina’s public education system. A pipe-smoking gentleman, he excelled at being a teacher, school superintendent, civil rights advocate, political leader, builder of schools and colleges, champion of art and music in schools, husband, father, and friend to thousands.

He began his teaching career on Hatteras Island when the only way of communicating with the island was by mail boat. He went from there to spend 42 years as an educator and administrator in the schools of Lenoir County, Harnett County, and Fayetteville. He was Harnett County’s superintendent from 1941 to 1951 before becoming superintendent in Fayetteville in 1951, a post he held until his retirement in 1971.

The Fayetteville Observer called Ross “an educational visionary.” He insisted school spending be fair and equitable during integration and worked behind the scenes to integrate the North Carolina Association of Educators. He led the building of 12 schools in Fayetteville, one of which was named for him. He insisted art and music be in the public-school curriculum, helped to found Fayetteville Technical College, and started the first girls’ basketball at Fayetteville High School. He also served two terms as High School Athletics Association president, helping to put in place policies that prevail today.

Ross was a charter member of the Lillington Rotary Club and an active Rotarian for 64 years. His passion for education led to the establishment in 1997 of the C. Reid Ross Endowment to provide scholarships to prospective educators. He died three years later on his 93rd birthday, Nov.12, 2000.
