About Robert William “Bill” McConnell, M.D.

Dr. Bill McConnellRobert William “Bill” McConnell, M.D., was born and raised in Southwest Virginia and returned for homecoming every year to visit family, friends and relatives. Known for his generosity and dedication to both his Virginia and North Carolina communities, McConnell was the founder of three scholarships, including this one.

After serving in the US Army Medical Corps, McConnell graduated from East Tennessee State University and went on to teach biology at Marion Virginia High School. After graduating from pharmacy school, he attended the Medical College of Virginia. A beloved doctor in his Lynchburg, Virginia, community, McConnell regularly made house calls and served as the county coroner.

McConnell came to North Carolina via Duke University when he was recruited for a radiology residency. He went on to become the first interventional radiologist in eastern North Carolina when he co-founded Eastern Radiologists in Greenville, N.C. McConnell was also one of the 41 community and medical leaders considered the founders of the East Carolina University School of Medicine, which was instrumental in improving access to health care for eastern North Carolinians.

He served in numerous roles for the Pitt County Memorial Hospital and on many boards and commissions devoted to radiology and radiation safety, including the FDA’s Medical Radiation Advisory Committee. His achievements were recognized by the American College of Radiology and he was awarded NC’s highest civilian honor, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.

McConnell’s dedication to his community and to fighting cancer was also illustrated in his efforts, along with wife Mary Raab McConnell, to fund North Carolina’s only American Cancer Society Hope Lodge. McConnell passed away in August 2021, after a meaningful and fulfilling life.
