Anna Barnette’s life in Mars Hill was disrupted when severe flooding and high winds from Hurricane Helene damaged her family’s property and required the removal of more than 30 trees. The resulting erosion created long-term financial strain for her parents, limiting their ability to help with college expenses.

“The erosion will be an ongoing problem for years to come, and the costs have affected my family’s savings,” Anna said.

Despite these challenges, Anna has remained focused on her education and community involvement. She graduated from Madison High School with strong academic and leadership credentials, serving as president of both the National Honor Society and the Interact Club, while also playing varsity soccer and basketball. She volunteers regularly with local service organizations, including Habitat for Humanity and area food pantries.

Anna will attend Emmanuel University where she will pursue a degree in business management with a minor in marketing and plans to play on the women’s soccer team.

“My goal is to build a career in human resource management, gain leadership experience, and eventually return to my hometown to teach and inspire future generations,” she said.

The Disaster Relief and Resilience Scholarship from the North Carolina Community Foundation will ease the cost burden left in the wake of Hurricane Helene, helping Anna focus on her studies without the added stress of student loans.

“I am deeply grateful for this support … This scholarship relieves the financial strain on my family and enables me to pursue my education with peace of mind. It is a blessing I will never forget.”
