Hurricane Helene flooded Kendall Clark’s family home in Avery County, causing significant and costly damage. The storm destroyed everything inside the house and three vehicles. She had to spend thousands to help repair the home and replace her car, which is vital for commuting to school and work in their rural area.

“The loss was monumental for my family,” Kendall said. “This experience quite literally changed my life and how I envision things. I realized that things can change in the blink of an eye and that I should never take what I have for granted.”

Despite the emotional and financial toll, Kendall is now a senior biology student at Appalachian State University. She is determined to become a wildlife biologist focused on conservation and animal rehabilitation in North Carolina’s mountains. She values ASU’s strong community and hands-on learning opportunities that fuel her passion.

Kendall is also actively involved in several clubs and volunteer projects, including the Rotaract Club and Biology Club at ASU. She has contributed to community events like trail cleanups, Rise Against Hunger meal packaging, and hurricane relief efforts in Avery and Watauga counties.

With support from the North Carolina Community Foundation Disaster Relief and Resilience Scholarship easing her financial burden, Kendall can continue her studies and pursue her goal of protecting North Carolina’s natural habitats.

“This scholarship will help me truly reach my fullest potential and support my success at Appalachian State University.”
