Apply for Grants from the Bertie-Hertford Community Foundation
The Bertie-Hertford Community Foundation will accept grant applications from July 24, 2026, until NOON eastern time on Aug. 25, 2026. Funds are available for qualified charitable organizations serving the local community from the affiliate’s community grantmaking fund and the Wayland L. Jenkins Jr. Endowment.
In 2026, BHCF expects to award substantially more in grants to eligible organizations due to the establishment of the Wayland L. Jenkins Jr. Endowment. This year, and in future years, BHCF plans to make a larger number of grants, with grant amounts expected to range from $5,000 to $50,000 thanks to funding from the Jenkins Endowment. Last year, BCHF awarded over $6,000 in grants from its community grantmaking fund.
Information for grantseekers
Grant applications are open to all eligible charitable organizations and partnerships that seek to improve the quality of life, address identified community needs, and support the long-term strength and resilience of Bertie and Hertford counties.
This includes proposals that address the following community needs identified through listening sessions and focus groups held in 2025:
- Education and youth development
- Physical and mental health and well-being
- Employment and workforce development
- Housing
The application will ope non July 24, 2026, and close at NOON eastern time on Aug. 25, 2026. Applications received after this deadline will not be accepted, including late submissions due to technology issues.
Grant awards are expected to be announced in Fall 2026.
Grants are expected to be made at three levels:
- Community Action Grants are expected to range from $5,000 to $15,000 and are designed to support grassroots projects, pilot programs, short-term community needs, community-led, resident-led or volunteer-driven efforts.
- Community Impact Grants are expected to range from $15,000 to $50,000 and are designed to support organizations and/or programs with demonstrated or promising impact, or projects addressing county-wide or multi-community needs.
- Community Change Grants are expected to range from $50,000+ and are designed to support multi-organization partnerships, and/or systems-level or cross-sector initiatives.
BHCF will also consider requests to make grants of more or less than the above amounts.
Grant funding may support:
- General operations
- Projects or programs
- Capital projects
- Capacity building or training and education designed to strengthen an organization’s performance and impact. This could include any training or education for board development, executive or leadership development, and/or fundraising.
- Collaborative projects, or applications submitted by a new or existing multi-organization partnership to leverage resources, expertise and boost impact.
To be eligible for a grant from this endowment, applicants must:
- Be a 501(c)(3) public charity, religious entity, public agency, or operate with a 501(c)(3) public charity fiscal sponsor. Please review our guidelines for more information about eligibility.
- Serve residents of Bertie and/or Hertford counties.
BHCF welcomes applications from small, local and emerging organizations and encourages partnerships. Applications may be submitted by new and existing multi-organization partnerships to leverage resources, expertise, and impact, and for pilot programs serving an unmet or short-term need.
Statewide organizations are encouraged to apply for programs and projects that demonstrate a direct local benefit to residents of Bertie and/or Hertford counties.
Organizations will use the 2026 Bertie-Hertford Community Foundation grant application in NCCF’s Grant Application Portal to apply for grants.
- Read the guidelines before you apply. Applications that do not adhere to the guidelines will be ineligible for funding.
- If this is your first time applying for a grant from NCCF, follow the instructions in Training Module I to create a profile. If your organization already has an account, use your information to log in.

A virtual workshop for organizations interested in applying for grants will be held in July. Please check back for updates. The workshop will provide an overview of this grant program, share tips for grant proposals and answer questions about the application process. Grantseeker workshops are optional, and attendance has no impact on grant award decisions.
Two in-person workshops were held in May.
Organizations that receive grant awards will be required to complete a follow-up report to support learning and accountability.
Reporting requirements will depend on grant size, with larger grants requiring a more thorough final report and smaller grants requiring a brief impact summary.
Grant recipients will receive more information about reporting requirements and deadlines from NCCF’s Eastern Region Program Officer.
The BHCF advisory board reviews applications and makes grant recommendations, while NCCF staff provide technical support for the process.
