Chowan Community Funds Foundation awards more than $26,000 in grants
The Chowan Community Funds Foundation, a North Carolina Community Foundation affiliate, has awarded $26,400 in grants to nine organizations supporting the local community.
The board of advisors granted:
- $3,000 to Albemarle Hopeline for From Victim to Survivor – support for families affected by domestic violence
- $2,000 to Boys & Girls Club of the Albemarle for general operating support
- $2,500 to Chowan/Perquimans Smart Start Partnership for Reach Out and Read
- $4,000 to Dream Hunt & Fishing Program for outdoor adventures and environmental camps
- $4,000 to Edenton-Chowan Food Pantry for weekend meals for kids
- $4,000 to Food Bank of the Albemarle for feeding the hungry in Chowan County
- $3,000 to Kids First, Inc. for evidence-based abuse treatment services
- $2,400 to The Marcus Jackson Project for general operating support
- $1,500 to Snapback NC, Co. for general operating support
“Supporting local nonprofits is fundamental to community well-being,” said Liz Brentjens, advisory board president of the Chowan Community Funds Foundation. “Our commitment to permanent philanthropy ensures our grants have a powerful, lasting impact.”
Funds for 2025 grants came from CCFF’s community grantmaking fund and the Ann L. Sams Endowment. Each year, CCFF’s advisory board uses dollars from its endowment funds to make grants to eligible local organizations, including nonprofits, local governments, schools and churches.

Advisory board members are volunteers who live and work in Chowan County, positioning them to strategically leverage resources, meet local needs and access opportunities. In addition to Brentjens, board members include Kathy Keel (vice president), Donna Koppelman (secretary) Tracy Benkusky (treasurer), Nicole Elliot, Marshall Jordan, Geordie Robison and Bill Sayre.
