Building Resilience in Jackson County
When Hurricane Helene swept through western North Carolina in 2024, it left behind more than damage, it was a reminder of how deeply we rely on each other in times of crisis.
In response, the Jackson County Community Foundation worked with the North Carolina Community Foundation’s Disaster Relief Fund to strengthen our community’s ability to prepare for whatever comes next.
In February 2025, a $30,000 grant was awarded to Jackson County Emergency Management to support local disaster preparedness. This grant was one of six awards from NCCF’s Disaster Relief Fund recommended by the Jackson County Community Foundation.
With this grant, Jackson County Emergency Management purchased new VIPER radios, a critical tool that keeps first responders connected when normal communication systems are down. They also added a mobile digital message sign used to share real-time information with residents during emergencies. Together, these tools will make a real difference when communication and clarity matter most.
