Dewey Wells Citizenship Fund awards local grants

The Dewey Wells Citizenship Fund, a fund of the Avery Community Foundation, recently held a reception in Newland to award grants to local Boys Scouts and Girl Scouts troops.

The Fund was founded by Judge Dewey Wells and assists in the development of character and promotion of good citizenship of young people in Avery County by awarding grants to organizations that work to instill the values of honesty, integrity, respect, resourcefulness, personal responsibility and duty in the county’s young people. The intended beneficiaries are units chartered by the Boy Scouts of America and by Girl Scouts of the United States of America.

Troops receiving awards at the Feb. 10 reception at the Chapman Teen Center were:

  • Boy Scouts of America Troop 807 of Banner Elk to purchase a troop trailer
  • Boy Scouts of America Troop 814 of Crossnore for program expenses
  • Boy Scouts of America Troop 888 of Newland for the exploring the world project
  • Girl Scouts of the United States Troop 2739 for program expenses
