Local nonprofit provides respite and comfort for families facing illness and loss

This summer, Clay County Community Foundation Advisory Board Member Jim Tiger visited The Still Place, a residential-style retreat that provides rest, renewal, and comfort for individuals and families experiencing serious life-altering illness or the loss of a child. All services are provided to participants at no cost.

In 2024, The Still Place served 225 people by providing 225 nights of lodging and meals. In addition to hosting children and families, the organization offers specialized retreats for bereaved parents, as well as alumni retreats for mothers who have previously participated in the program.

The welcoming home features two bedrooms, a sleeping loft, two full baths, two half baths, a sunroom, a full kitchen, a dining and craft room, and a cozy great room with a fireplace. The home is also stocked with board games, books, puzzles, card games, and a wide variety of craft supplies to encourage creativity and connection.

The Hidey Hole at The Still Place

One of the most cherished spaces at The Still Place is the “Hidey Hole,” a converted attic play area where every child who visits leaves their name on the walls.

The outdoor setting is equally inviting. Compass Creek winds through the property, which includes a playscape with a wading area, a fire pit, a tree swing, a Hobbit House and a Tree House. Families can also enjoy a variety of outdoor games while spending time together in nature.

Lori McClure, the on-site director, expressed her gratitude to the North Carolina Community Foundation and its affiliate foundation, the Clay County Community Foundation for their $2,500 grant awarded in 2025. The grant helps support The Still Place’s programs and day-to-day operations and allows the organization to continue providing a peaceful place of hope and healing for families during some of life’s most difficult moments.
