New scholarship to support Yadkin County high school graduates (February 2023)

A new scholarship fund honoring a lifelong resident and supporter of education has been established at the North Carolina Community Foundation to benefit graduates of Yadkin County high schools.

The Jecholiah Dinkins Hollar Legacy Scholarship will be open to graduating seniors of a Yadkin County high school who plan to attend a private, four-year college or university located in North Carolina to obtain an undergraduate degree. Preference will be given to students planning to attend Duke University.

The scholarship will be awarded to students based on their high academic standing, evidence of good moral character, and service to the community. Students are eligible without regard to financial need, but award amounts may be based on the financial need of the individual student.

The first scholarship will be awarded in spring 2023. It is expected to award $10,000 to one or more students.

Jecholiah Dinkins Hollar was keenly interested in literature and history. She collected hundreds of books over the years, most of them gleaned from yard and estate sales. With these books, she nurtured a love of learning in her children and grandchildren.

Although she was almost entirely self-educated, she prioritized education for her children and grandchildren. All of her twelve children graduated from high school and five attended college, and as a result of her encouragement, her children and grandchildren have enjoyed success in a variety of professions and in life.

Her grandson, Dale E. Hollar, established this scholarship in his grandmother’s memory and to continue to inspire future generations of students. He grew up in Yadkin County and graduated from Forbush High School. He then attended Duke University and received both an undergraduate and law degree. His career included working as an attorney in energy, environmental and employee law among other fields.
