November celebrations inspire us all

November is coming to a close this week, and I’m sad to see it go.  Don’t get me wrong – I am looking forward to the upcoming holidays and the time with family and friends.  But, this November, I got to be a part of something that inspires my work all year long — the power of collective giving.  This month, communities across the country have been celebrating National Philanthropy Day and Community Foundation Week. Here in North Carolina, we take part in events honoring Nonprofit Awareness Month.

Here are a few examples to give you just a flavor of what’s been happening with NCCF and our NCCF affiliates:

The New Hanover County Community Foundation, celebrated National Philanthropy Day with the Cape Fear Region Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.  In its 25th year, this foundation was proud to have made $25,000 in grants to area nonprofits this year!

The Watauga County Community Foundation (WCCF) hosted its annual luncheon and gave its Spirit of Philanthropy Award to High Country United Way. This year, WCCF decided to make a grant to the United Way and its Visions Council to support more strategic problem-solving around community needs. This type of collaboration is such a great example of our affiliates in their community leadership role!

On the very same day, “Twin Counties  Philanthropy Day”  was being celebrated. The Rocky Mount Chamber of Commerce, City of Rocky Mount, United Way of the Tar River Region and the North Carolina Community Foundation were partners in helping to raise awareness about the power of local philanthropy.  After presentations that included the Mayor of Rocky Mount, 21 area nonprofits hosted open houses and welcomed the public to learn more about the work they do and the services they provide across a spectrum of community needs.

Convenings, collaborations and connections – all vital roles of NCCF and our statewide affiliates!

Yes, November is almost over and so it is with celebrations – you plan for and anticipate them with eagerness and before you know it, they are over.  But … I’m lucky because early next fall, I will be eagerly awaiting the November 2013 philanthropy celebrations.
