Rebecca Gatling Long Memorial Scholarship accepting applications

The North Carolina Community Foundation recently announced the Rebecca Gatling Long Memorial Scholarship is accepting applications. More than $5,000 is available for area students.

Applicants must be Northampton County high school seniors and residents and pursuing higher education at a qualified institution of higher learning, including qualified vocational or technical programs.

Applications are due May 17. Eligible students must possess a GPA of at least 3.0 on a four-point scale, demonstrate financial need and involvement in academic activities, sports or community service.

According to Kelly Lee, NCCC program officer, the scholarship provides a good opportunity for Northampton County students to further their educations. “Our aim is to raise awareness about the Rebecca Gatling Long Memorial Scholarship with the local community,” she said, “We’re honored to steward this scholarship, which has awarded over $16,000 to area students, on behalf of our fundholder who is investing in the next generation of Northampton County.”

The scholarship was established to honor Rebecca Long (1898-1982), known as Miss Rebie. Long lived and worked almost her entire life in Northampton County. An early graduate of Chowan College, she was an avid reader, a kind and generous person and a lifelong learner. Throughout her life she nourished young people and encouraged them to pursue their dreams.

After teaching school and working with in her father’s office, (P.J. Long served as Northampton County School Superintendent from 1897-1934) Miss Rebie began working in the Clerk of Court’s office. She later was elected to be Clerk of Court and became the first woman in Northampton County to be elected to public office.
