After Ashe County native Ronald “Ron” Keith Vannoy died from cancer in 2018 at age 62, his parents Ward and Barbara Lyall Vannoy established a scholarship in his memory.

The Ronald Keith Vannoy Memorial Scholarship provides financial assistance to a graduating Ashe County High School senior planning to attend a two-year community college or trade school.

Vannoy attended Forsyth Technical Community College and graduated with a degree in criminal justice from UNC-Charlotte. He then served as a probation officer for the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Department. Vannoy was known for his love of animals, especially strays, and of travel. He also enjoyed caring for elderly relatives, including aunts and uncles.
