Swain High School receives portraits honoring students and school band endowment

Jan Pennington, Patti Freemon and Pam Phillips share portraits of Bill and Mickey Bunn.Swain High School recently received portraits of two former students, Bill and Mickey Bunn, to be hung in the band room.

Cousins Jan Pennington, Patti Freemon and Pam Phillips of the Bunn family made the trip to Swain County to share the portraits in remembrance: Bill (21 years old) and Mickey (16 years old) were active members of the band program who were killed by a drunk driver in 1980.

To commemorate their memory and their love of music, parents Suzanne and Clarence Donald Bunn set up an endowment through the NC Community Foundation to help support and sustain the band program. The funds are used for the marching band uniforms, the Bunn Memorial Trophy and other band program needs.

“We are thankful that the Bunn family chose to honor the memory of Bill and Mickey through our band program,” said Karen Williams Lanning, Swain High School band director. “Thanks to this Foundation, instruments have been and will continue to be placed into the hands of Swain County students for many years to come.”
