The Dewey Wells Citizenship Fund, was established at the North Carolina Community Foundation by Judge Dewey Wells to encourage good citizenship and character among Avery County’s youth.
How to Apply
The Dewey Wells Citizenship Fund, part of the Avery Community Foundation’s family of funds, will accept applications from eligible organizations beginning April 10, 2026. Applications are due at NOON eastern time on May 12, 2026. Grants typically range from $500 to $1,000.

This fund’s purpose is to assist in the development of character and promotion of good citizenship in and among young people in Avery County, NC, by awarding grants to organizations that work to instill in the county’s young people the values of honesty, integrity, respect, resourcefulness, personal responsibility, and duty to God and country. The primary intended beneficiaries are units chartered by Scouting America (formerly known as the Boy Scouts of America) and by the Girl Scouts of the United States of America.
