About Robert E. Chilton

Robert E. Chilton loved his family, reading and learning. After working for many years in education, he retired as the superintendent of Mount Airy City Schools. When his son, Eric, asked “If I could do something for you after you die, what would you want?” Robert’s immediate response was “I would want a scholarship for kids at Mount Airy High School who have the grades but not the money to go to college.”Robert, who served in the Army during World War ll and was a lay minister at First Presbyterian Church, had a reputation for being fair and not judging others. He concentrated on making the best decisions, whether that was driving the bus routes before determining a snow day or addressing faculty concerns at the schools. He did things by the book, saying, “I have to answer to my conscience and my God.”
