About Tom and Freida Johnson

Tom and Freida Johnson believed in faith, family, hard work and education. Tom was a school principal in Catawba County for 43 years, and Freida, who grew up as one of 13 children, retired from First National Bank of Catawba County as a senior vice president.

Their son, Jim, said the scholarship endowment was created in memory of his generous and humble parents because they knew the opportunities that a scholarship could bring to the students of Bunker Hill High School, where Tom was principal for 11 years. Their sons, Phil and Jim (and all of Jim’s children), attended the high school in Claremont.

“We want the students to have every opportunity to succeed,” Jim said. “Bunker Hill High School is near and dear to our hearts.”
