Herman, a recipient of the Sammy and Shirley Church Scholarship, is attending Duke University. A resident of West Jefferson, NC, she graduated from Ashe County High School.

A visit to the hospital in her birthplace, Sao Jose do Rio Preto, Brazil, inspired her to study psychology and minor in chemistry. When she witnessed the way the psychologists and doctors treated young cancer patients, she knew she wanted to be a part of the difference they were making.

After college, Herman plans to attend medical school for psychiatry, with a focus on pediatric oncology, and live out her dream of working in a hospital.
