Criteria

Eligible applicants are graduating seniors, or graduates, of a Yadkin County high school who have been accepted to, and plan to further their education at, an institution of higher learning, including two- or four-year colleges, community colleges, and technical schools. In addition to academic performance, recipients should possess the qualities and traits of good citizenship as demonstrated by being a person of integrity who is responsible, honest, respectful, kind, fair, compassionate, and involved in the community.

About Shirley Moore Bolick

Shirley Moore Bolick was born in Yadkin County and lived with her parents in the Courtney community. Both of Bolick’s parents were educators and she had a rich family history of education in the Yadkin Valley region as well as other parts of the state dating back into the 1920s.

Bolick attended Courtney School in Yadkin County, and later graduated from Wake Forest University where she majored in education/teaching. Shirley Moore Bolick

Bolick taught in Roanoke Rapids, Mount Airy and West Yadkin schools before retiring. Bolick was a lifelong member of Courtney Baptist Church. She remained actively involved in church activities throughout her lifetime. She was known for her attention to detail, committee involvement, discerning mind, and welcoming smile.

She met Bill J. Bolick, while she was teaching in Mt. Airy, and married him in 1978. They lived in Yadkinville for the remainder of their lives together, until Bill's death in 2010. Shirley continued to live in Yadkinville until her death in September of 2021.

This scholarship was established by Bolick because she was committed to inspiring students to pursue their dreams through education, responsible citizenship and community service.
